CAUSTIC COMMENTARY: Tennis, Viagra Boys, Fly Anakin, Goose, Deerhoof & More

For our last Caustic Commentary of April 2025, we’re heading into the new month with a sprawling list of new releases. April brought us some “Album of the Year” contenders, and that race is only heating up with this week’s New Music Friday. This week brought us a downpour of innovative LPS and electrifying singles, ranging from intensely refreshing punk to shoegaze bliss. This week’s Caustic is diverse for the sake of it; this New Music Friday gifted music fans with a cornucopia of passionate performances that are too good to ignore.

Tennis – “Always The Same”

Face Down In The Garden

It is a bittersweet day in the alt-pop community as the duo Tennis releases their latest and final LP. Face Down In The Garden and the upcoming Tennis tour mark the end of the band as the duo announces this will be their last album together. They’re leaving their cult following with nine spellbinding, sun-drenched ballads that add a hypnotic layer of psychedelia to the duo’s refreshing pop tendencies. “Always the Same” is a mesmerizing highlight from the LP, blending lush simplicity with nimble vocal melodies. 

William Tyler – “Electric Lake”

Time Indefinite

In the latest chapter of William Tyler’s experimental instrumentals, Time Indefinite takes you on a mystifying journey through the lens of a veteran producer. Tyler’s new nine-song LP swirls and twirls around plush lucidity and complex synth work as the artist’s fearlessness manifests into another stunning outing. “Electric Lake is one of the more intense pieces of Time Indefinite, with droning, beautiful synths juxtaposing the rush of the hauntingly enticing, crawling melodies. 

Goose – “Iguana Song”

Everything Must Go

On their latest LP, veteran jam band Goose flips the script and takes the form of pop-leaning fusion experts. Everything Must Go is a head-spinning display of the band’s wide-ranging sonic garden as they leisurely stroll through, picking fruits from the funk tree, psychedelic bush, and indie rock vine. “Iguana Song” encapsulates Goose’s new LP, featuring agile pop melodies that navigate bouncy electric guitars and off-kilter drum patterns for an expansive and unforgettable standout. 

Viagra Boys – “You N33d Me”

After an explosive 2022 that put them in the modern punk pantheon, Viagra Boys released a daring follow-up to their breakout year. Vigar aboys is a blunt, brutally intense 11-song outing from the punk provocateurs that introduces the band as more than we expected. Viagra Boys employ a poetically potent style of writing that allows fans to get a bit closer to the mysterious band. “You N33d Me” is an anthem of overconfidence as the band brags about their niche knowledge while pleading with a fading love. 

Sunflower Bean – “Take Out Your Insides”

Mortal Primetime 

For their fourth album, New York indie rock outfit Sunflower Bean crafts a confessional and sprawling effort. Mortal Primetime is raw honesty set against glistening indie rock arrangements that lean on dense, understated arrangements, as the band’s songwriting takes center stage. “Take Out Your Insides” is marked by brutally honest writing as the band pleads for vulnerability amidst fantastically bright guitar work and sturdy drum patterns. 

Fly Anakin – “Forever Dream”

(The) Forever Dream

On his most ambitious album yet, the prolific vocalist/producer Fly Anakin cements himself as one of Hip-hop’s brightest and most innovative young stars. (The) Forever Dream, executively produced by Quelle Chris, is 16 abstract portraits of Anakin’s ever-evolving artistry as he navigates off-kilter beats to deliver his acrobatic vocals. The title track features twinkling keys that cascade around a passionate vocal performance, evoking the warmth of lo-fi while maintaining vibrant textures for a standout moment on Anakin’s latest chapter.  

Broncho – “Save Time”

Natural Pleasure

On their first album since 2018, Broncho crafts lush shoegaze-leaning balladry with gentle vocals and stunning simplicity. Natural Pleasure is a hypnotic outing that continues the band’s streak of expanding on their sonic realm, and this time, they dive headfirst into cloud-like textures and moving, poetic songwriting. “Save Time” hints at the simplistic beauty of Broncho’s latest. The spellbinding standout includes swaying drum patterns that emphasize the infectious vocal performance and touch on the folksy tendencies of Natural Pleasure

Deerhoof – “Disobedience”

Noble and Godlike In Ruin

Veteran noise rock icons Deerhoof return with their twentieth LP, Noble and Godlike In Ruin, which sounds as wonderfully complex and chaotically digestible as ever. The album follows an innovative rollout that saw Deerhoof release a single on Craigslist. The 10-song tracklist is a whirlpool of lofty visions tied together by undeniable creativity and established prowess. “Disobedience” is a fast-paced carnival ride, marked by blaring horns, unpredictable drum patterns, and searing guitars, that creates a mesmerizing display of daring artistry.  

Maria Somerville – “Violet”

Luster

The long-awaited sophomore effort from singer/songwriter Maria Somerville has finally arrived, and it is the moody psych-pop outing we all hoped it would be. Luster is a dense field of vocal harmonies cascading around drum-driven arrangements, giving her new material an experimental, shoegaze feel. “Violet” is an early favorite, characterized by distorted tones and warping vocals that collide to create a warm, pop ballad with freeing melodies. 

Redveil – “Square One”

Single

On his first release of 2025, Maryland’s Redveil reminds us why he is one of the most exciting voices in the burgeoning Hip-hop scene. “Square One” is an anthemic single that has the artist delivering a passionate vocal performance and reflective lyrics. Redveil’s last full-length LP was released in 2022, and if what he has in store comes anywhere close to “Square One,” we’re in for a treat. 

Natalie Bergman – “Gunslinger”

My Home Is Not In This World

The time has finally arrived for the long-awaited follow-up to Natalie Bergman’s stellar debut album. Bergman’s sophomore effort, My Home Is Not In This World, is set to be released on July 18 via Third Man Records, and “Gunslinger” is our lead single. The new single features a quaint vocal performance that accents the nostalgic, cinematic feel of the arrangement, creating a memorable lead single for an anticipated release. 

Squid – “The Hearth and Circle Round Fire”

Single

Just days ahead of Squid’s North American tour in support of their acclaimed Cowards LP, Squid, the post-punk golden children, release a complex and challenging single. “The Hearth and Circle Round Fire is a glitchy, left-field, six-minute odyssey with restless energy that manifests into moments of garage rock and warping post-punk bliss. 

The Band CAMINO – “Infinity”

Single

Alt-pop outfit The Band CAMINO releases its first single of 2025 with a fireworks display of infectiousness. “Infinity” arrives like a shooting star, featuring dense yet danceable instrumentation that is sliced through by anthemic vocals. “Infinity” marks the band’s first release since 2024’s “Bruises” three-pack single. 

The Minus 5 – “Let the Rope Hold, Cassie Lee”

Oar On, Penelope!

This week, legendary alt-rock band The Minus 5 shared the third single from their anticipated new LP. As fans eagerly await the May 30 release of Oar On, Penelope!, the veteran supergroup releases the album’s latest single, “Let The Rope Hold, Cassie Lee.” The hectic yet polished single is drenched in sunny melodies and bright tones, following in the larger-than-life footsteps of its predecessors.

Durand Jones & The Indications – “Flower Moon”

Flowers 

Durand Jones & The Indications are gearing up for their first LP since 2021, and the latest single is pure, jazzy balladry. With Flowers set to be released on June 27 via Dead Oceans, the modern soul icons release “Flower Moon,” a staggeringly outstanding tune. The second single from the upcoming LP, “Flower Moon,” is a dreamscape of soaring falsettos that gently float over subtle horn sections and nimble drum patterns.
