Part of what made Faith No More such a great band was their penchant for being weird and subversive while still managing to write some undeniably great and catchy songs in the process. Indeed, it was often hard to tell if they were a great pop band masquerading as an alt-metal band, or a great alt-metal band moonlighting as a pop band, but whatever the case, it was all part of what made them such a delightfully unpredictable and unconventional group. A good example of that is “Edge of the World”, which is the closing number off their 1989 breakout album The Real Thing. It finds the band in full lounge-act mode, singing a jazzy little tune about some creepy old guy crushing on a girl 40 years his junior. It’s typical of Patton’s characteristically twisted sense of humor, but as if the song wasn’t cringeworthy enough for you, check out this surreal (not to mention kind of hilarious) duet with Ed Lover and Dr. Dre on ‘Yo! MTV Raps’ from 1990, which is truly a trip-and-a-half to behold:
