Bass Drum of Death is getting back to basics. From the bare-bones title of their sixth record—SIX—to the writing approach—their first two LPs were recorded entirely on GarageBand—the creative process for the group is strikingly similar to the early stages of their career. While the new album marks a return to their original recording method, there are a few notable changes. Instead of working solo on the demos, frontman John Barrett and the band (Jim Barrett, guitar; Ian Kirkpatrick, drums) convened for several sessions in Barrett’s home studio in Nashville to bring the songs to life.
The band’s new album, SIX, is set to arrive on September 12, and the noisy, straightforward “Never Gonna Drink About You” is our latest preview of the anticipated release. This is a no-bells-or-whistles effort, no metaphors to be interpreted, no complex melodies to dissect; just busy garage rock with a punk attitude and something urgent to say. “Never Gonna Drink About You” is centered around the relief of finally moving on from something that has haunted your mind and tormented you to the point of numbing yourself. The band captures the frantic energy of these complex emotions and filters them into a no-frills anthem with searing guitar melodies, thudding drum patterns, and cartoonishly animated vocals. With no time to spare, the band navigates this tough decision by making it look effortless through a simplistic yet venomous approach to production. “Never Gonna Drink About You” is a beautifully chaotic breakup anthem, and with a new album on the way, Bass Drum of Death appears to be getting back to their roots on the latest single.
