George, named after a beloved late dog, is a rock band from Richmond, Virginia. Blending garage, alt, punk, indie, and rock and roll, the band is known for high-energy shows and urgent, melodic songs delivered with unpolished grit.
The story of George begins with Camilo Medina (Divino Niño & S.3.R), who played in bands with Katie Condon in Miami and later with Darrin Higgins in Chicago. In 2011, Darrin and Camilo traveled to Miami for a show with Katie, and Katie and Darrin have been together ever since, marrying in 2021 (Camilo likes to call himself Cupid). Years later, in Richmond, where George is based, Katie (vocals, guitar) and Darrin (drums) saw A Star Is Born with Brent McCoryn (bass) in 2018. Afterward, they played some music together, and as they like to say, “a band is born.” Chris Damon (guitar) joined in on live shows in 2023 and quickly became a mainstay member. Jimmy Ghaphery, who is featured on all three records, often joins live on sax, and when he does, the band calls themselves Super George.
The return of George is minted by “Elián,” an unassuming yet colorful single. With a hint of shoegaze blanketing the vocals, a touch of pop painting the melodies, and a thudding tempo that evokes the spirit of nostalgic alt-rock, this isn’t a simple return from a phenomenal band; it is a proper introduction to their fresh sonic terrain. Clocking in at just two-and-a-half minutes, “Elián” beautifully details the intricate approach of George, with hazy vocals creating a vibrant energy and a jangly arrangement that emphasizes the nuances at work here. The magic lies within the spaces between the chugging arrangement; it’s in the lyrics. While the listener becomes lost in the dense yet dynamic instrumentation, George is bringing a narrative to life through palpable emotions and raw imagery. “Elián” introduces George as fearless members of a burgeoning alt-rock scene who welcome lofty visions and blend them into their cacophony of natural prowess.
