LISTEN: NOTADOG Craft Animated Punk With Raw Emotions On “Simply Scrolling”

NOTADOG is a Boston-based punk/emo band with a penchant for emotionally earnest lyrics coupled with a fun, down-to-earth play style made to get audiences moving and dancing with the music. This exhilarating 3-piece was created when Eric Fegan, their singer/guitarist, exhausted with 20 years of classical composition, was ready to vent authentically through other means. After meeting Phoenix Campagnuolo (Bass) and Jason Gugick (Drums) at Berklee College of Music, NOTADOG was founded and off to the races with their raucous debut singles, “The Munchies” and “Maybe.”

We have all reached a point of emotional turmoil where the only way to break the tension is a long, harrowing yell. No need to strain your vocal chords this time around, NOTADOG’s “Simply Scrolling” takes those bottled-up emotions and sets them to cathartic punk with infectious energy. This song captures a rare moment when a musician creates something so singular yet relatable, highlighting the intricacy of this band’s approach. Fegan uses NOTADOG’s latest release as a vehicle for emotions too raw to express simply, and rather than hold on to these feelings, he lets them all loose throughout this performance. The unforgettable vocal performance is accented by sleek guitar riffs that wrap around crashing drums and subtle, searing strings, creating a chaotic arrangement that only emphasizes the sentiment behind “Simply Scrolling.” This young band is only getting started, but “Simply Scrolling” introduces NOTADOG as a refreshing addition to an ever-evolving punk scene.

“‘Simply Scrolling’ was my way to cope with a recent emotional breakup. I was caught rehashing past memories and dwelling on the perfect parts of the relationship, all while trying to block out the moments that led to the breakup,” explains Fegan. “When recording, I used the violin duo and the eventual ending solo as a metaphor for the dramatic roller coaster of the relationship.”
