Matt Storm makes music that fuses vintage soul and jazz with modern alternative sounds. A songwriter since age 13, his writing touches on introspection and hard truths. The multi-genre, multi-instrumentalist is also a third culture kid, born in the U.S. and raised overseas before settling in Western Canada. His self-taught style reflects his non-traditional upbringing.
Storm has been performing and touring extensively since 2014, as well as working behind the scenes with JUNO-nominated artists. He is currently working on his third official project, SPILT. The short EP is an experimental fusion of sounds and art that’s influenced Storm over the years.
Storm’s new single. “Where Does This Love Go?” is a lush, hypnotic, soulful outing that evokes visions of misshapen clouds and dreamy textures. Love is a palpable emotion, and Storm wants to know where that intensity goes when a relationship comes to a halt. The philosophical sophistication of this question is wrapped in a haze of neck-breaking drums, heavenly vocals, and nimble keys, almost as if the jovial nature of the instrumentation is meant to soften the blow of the tough questions that drive Storm’s latest. “Where Does This Love Go?” sonically explores the middle ground between contemporary soul and nostalgic Hip-hop, yet even with the thought-provoking lyrics and complex fusion work, Storm’s visions never come off as lofty. The artist showcases his ability to stretch the limits of his artistry while maintaining a welcoming atmosphere, creating that infectious feeling you get once you press play on “Where Does This Love Go?”
