Whether he’s living in his van in Santa Cruz, surfing in France, working on a horse ranch in Montana or paragliding in Utah, Tyke James is one nomadic individual, a rolling stone who does indeed gather The Moss, the band name under which he’s written and performed a unique brand of alternative rock, as a teen first in O’ahu, Hawaii, and currently in Salt Lake City.
The Moss broke through with the four-song Insomnia EP, leading the way with more than 25 million streams. The title track – which James describes as “a bittersweet song about codependency, the point in a relationship where you feel incomplete without the other person” — has landed on Spotify’s U.S. Viral 50 chart with major support from Sirius XM’s Alt Nation. Other highlights of the past year include well-received sets at Las Vegas’ Life Is Beautiful and Idaho’s The Festival at Sandpoint. The Moss will release their new album, Big Blue Moon, on April 24.
“Your Way,” The Moss’ second single of the year, the band’s singular, infectious approach to pop-tinted indie rock gets stripped down to the necessary. The naturally groovy and unpredictable simplicity of the band’s latest is the type of song that sticks to the side of your mind, with its innate, catchy energy lingering in the room long after it’s finished. James’s distant yet palpable vocals add a layer of dynamics to this performance, giving “Your Way” that depth that allows the listener to explore the world The Moss has built. In less than three minutes, the band gives you a thousand reasons why they’ve skyrocketed to the forefront of their scene. Under the guise of ethereal ambiance, some funky influences set The Moss apart from their peers, as if this band needed a leg up in that regard. “Your Way,” the band’s latest single, is an unforgettable listen that allows The Moss’ nuances to beautifully flourish, while providing the listener with an anthem to take with them from day to day.
