LISTEN: Zoon’s “One Too Many Nights” Brings Psychedelia To Lush Indie Rock

ZOON (Zoongide’ewin), the musical work of songwriter, composer, activist, and artist Daniel Monkman, is announcing their highly anticipated third album, HAPPY THOUGHT SCHOOL, set to be released on June 19 via Paper Bag Records. Zoongide’ewin, meaning “bravery” and “a strong and fearless heart,” was given at a traditional sweat ceremony, and Daniel is the second name they use to move around the world.

“One Too Many Nights” is our first preview of Zoon’s anticipated new album, and a proper introduction to the atmospheric approach this artist takes to their shoegaze-tinted indie rock anthems. With a hint of psychedelia and a plethora of prowess, Zoon immerses the listener in a world they can call their own, one built on the back of experimentation without alienating a single soul. There is an unpredictability to “One Too Many Nights” that keeps the listener coming back, with each listen revealing another layer of this single. What starts as a lush, blissful ballad quickly transitions into a guitar-heavy, dense orchestration, with the stunning vocals anchoring the listener down to earth. HAPPY THOUGHT SCHOOL is shaping up to be a landmark release for Zoon if this first single is any indication of what is to be expected. The artist raises the bar with a beautifully crafted, warping ballad that balances Zoon’s singularity with their infectious tendencies.
