LISTEN: Mike Jett’s “Monty’s Curse” Is Blissful & Refreshing Indie Rock

26-year-old Mike Jett has been concocting a musical potion in the Toronto music scene for the better half of a decade. The mysterious musician lands somewhere between The Clash and Smashing Pumpkins, employing the loose definitions of punk and the dark grunge of the 90s. After beginning to release music under the Mike Jett name on his YouTube channel in 2025, the artist made his official debut with the release of “Monty’s Curse.”

On their official debut release, Jett establishes something no one can take away from them: Individuality. “Monty’s Curse” is the result of tireless creativity and self-analysis, allowing for this seemingly minimalist single to reveal multitudes. With a low-gurgling vocal performance, sturdy percussion, and guitar riffs with psychedelic undertones, “Monty’s Curse” is not a young artist capturing the essence of their heroes, but a pure artist finding something they can call their own. Jett infuses their vague yet vibrant songwriting into these subdued grooves, blending the artist’s mystique with a natural ability to craft melodies that linger with the listener long after the track ends. “Monty’s Curse” is a proper introduction to a young artist boldly diving into rock music in a refreshing fashion, and is just the start of what is promising to be a fruitful career for Jett.
