Aaron Lee Tasjan has always written like someone with a point to prove, but on Get Over It, Underdog (Blue Élan Records), out July 17, that restless energy sharpens into something more deliberate. The Grammy-nominated songwriter leans further into the tension that’s long defined his work—balancing sharply observed social commentary with a deeply personal, almost confessional streak—while delivering a set of songs that feel immediate without sacrificing nuance.
Across its 11 tracks, Get Over It, Underdog finds Tasjan interrogating the mythology of the American underdog with equal parts wit and weariness. These aren’t triumphal narratives. Instead, he picks apart the contradictions baked into that identity, tracing how the same traits that fuel resilience can just as easily spiral into self-sabotage. It’s a record that lives in that gray area, where self-perception, ambition, and doubt collide.
The album’s latest single, “Lost & Alone,” captures that push-and-pull in miniature. Built on a buoyant, almost disarming arrangement, the song follows a protagonist caught between isolation and the need for connection, masking anxiety and intrusive thoughts behind a carefully maintained exterior. It’s a familiar Tasjan move—pairing bright melodies with heavier emotional undercurrents—and it lands with a quiet sting.
There’s also an unshakable sense of loss hanging over the project. The late Todd Snider played a pivotal role in shaping the album, offering guidance during a period when Tasjan found himself questioning his creative direction. What followed was a burst of renewed focus and clarity, ultimately leading to some of the album’s most direct and unguarded material. Snider co-wrote “The Real,” and while his passing came shortly after the record’s completion, his presence lingers throughout—less as a shadow than a steadying force behind the album’s sense of purpose.
Elsewhere, Tasjan turns his gaze outward. Tracks like “Welcome To The Clown Show” and “Science Friction” tap into a broader cultural unease, reflecting a world that feels increasingly unstable without slipping into cynicism. On “Ballad Of An East Canton Lowlife,” he circles back to his Midwestern roots, revisiting the alienation of his younger years while underscoring the connective power of music that carried him through.
Co-produced with longtime collaborator Mark Miller, Get Over It, Underdog plays like both a personal reckoning and a wider meditation on the stories we tell ourselves—about who we are, where we come from, and what it means to endure. Tasjan doesn’t offer easy answers here. Instead, he leans into the uncertainty, emerging with a record that feels as searching as it is assured, and further cements his place as one of Americana’s more compelling and unpredictable voices.
