Mystique is a luxury the internet has taken away. The musical geniuses of yesteryear were not expected to reach the same standards set by the all-seeing eye of social media, with its thirst for half-baked content and pseudo-outrage. The internet is a beast that requires a constant flow of fresh blood, but there was a time when artists only appeared in the public eye when they had art ready to be shared. Luckily for the mysterious funk group Skull Snaps, their tenure as an innovative quartet happened before the digital explosion, allowing them to nearly disappear into the musical history books, if it wasn’t for the hypnotic percussion on their song “It’s a New Day.”

In 1973, Skull Snaps released their lone studio effort, their 9-song eponymous debut. The sleek psychedelic funk of the album, at the time of its release, flew under the radar, and what happened to this four-piece after its release remains a mystery. The band, seemingly, disappeared, only to reappear for a reissue of Skull Snaps with Ten12 Records, which included an additional five tracks. Even during their period away from the spotlight, Skull Snaps’ presence still echoed throughout Hip-hop, which brings us to this Golden Age Thursday. “It’s a New Day” features an iconic drum pattern that has been employed by the likes of Big L and Ol’ Dirty Bastard. You can hear the original sample and how Hip-hop revealed the secret prowess of Skull Snaps below.
