LISTEN: A Different Thread Bring Raw Longing To Alt-country On Poetic “Goodbye Muddy Waters”

A Different Thread is a transatlantic folk/alt-country duo based in North Carolina, formed by songwriters Alicia Best from Durham, NC, and UK-born Robert Jackson. The pair first met busking on the streets of Ireland and spent the next decade touring internationally while navigating visas and long stretches living on separate continents. Their harmony-driven songwriting blends Old World folk traditions with contemporary Americana storytelling. The duo has landed support slots with The Milk Carton Kids and Jody Stephens of Big Star and received praise from BBC 6 Music, NPR, The Bluegrass Situation, and No Depression. The duo’s new album, Over Again, is available now.

The long road to Over Again has finally reached a dead-end, and “Goodbye Muddy Waters” is an early favorite from the long-awaited release. Throughout the LP, A Different Thread intersects their robust worldview with Americana tradition, and this tune feels like the epitome of this sentiment. With soaring harmonies that fall like loose feathers over dusty, infectious twang, “Goodbye Muddy Waters” is a cathartic listen. The inherently captivating highlight is far more than a preview of a stellar album; it’s a delicate conversation with oneself about accepting the things you can’t change. There is a palpable, raw longing on these vocals that echoes the pains of what-could’ve-been, processing a life you can’t achieve, while detailing the beginning stages of accepting these harsh truths. “Goodbye Muddy Waters” is pure Americana in an era of overproduced, glitzy country, and is just one example of the prowess on display across Over Again.
