In July 1986, Jerry Garcia of the Grateful Dead slipped into a diabetic coma, remaining unconscious for five days and requiring months of recovery afterward. During his absence, bandmates Bill Kreutzmann and Brent Mydland formed a side project called Go Ahead. The band also included Alex Ligertwood and David Margen, who were members of Santana. Go Ahead kicked off live in 19866 and then continued on and off through the band’s final performance in early 1988, but never released a proper album.
Common setlists from the band included the covers: Not Fade Away” (The Crickets), “She’s Not There” (The Zombies), “Dear Mr. Fantasy” (Traffic), “Hey Pocky A-Way” (The Meters), “(I Can’t Get No) Satisfaction” (The Rolling Stones), “Good Lovin'”. While Deadheads would be pleased with the Brent originals: “Far From Me,” “Never Trust a Woman,” “Tons of Steel,” “Don’t Need Love,” “Easy to Love You”. As Kreutzman turns 80 on Thursday this week, there’s no better time than now to listen to Go Ahead’s full show from Milwaukee on 10/24/86.
