Australian songwriter/producer Callum MacDonald (widely recognized as a core member of the Brisbane outfit Daste) is this week proud to unveil his debut solo EP, Dreaming In Colour, under his Monsieur Mellow moniker. The EP serves as the culmination of an 18-month journey of self-discovery. Building on the momentum of previously released singles like the infectious “Paris Strut,” the Taj Ralph-assisted “Slow Down,” and the soulful “Roll River, Roll” featuring Jackson James Smith, the full project now introduces the sweeping title-track, “Dreaming In Colour.”
A solo debut is no easy undertaking, but the individuality expressed in these first few outings by MacDonald showcases a confident musician unafraid to execute lofty visions. “Dreaming In Colour” emphasizes this sentiment through intrinsic grooves and cartoonish vocals. MacDonald’s vocals take on a ghostly aesthetic on his latest single, sounding distant yet palpable, as if the artist badly needs you to hear the magic contained on “Dreaming In Colour.” Call it lo-fi dance, call it indie-pop, but whatever you call it, don’t forget to mention the nuances of it all. This is an unassuming yet wildly colorful performance, the type that feels as if it has existed long before MacDonald conceived his solo career. While maintaining welcoming rhythms and palpable singularity, “Dreaming In Colour” properly introduces an artist with otherworldly ideas and the fearless prowess to execute them.
