So what good is rebellion without a system left to aim it at? British Columbia’s Mock Media – a troupe of four childhood friends – have decided to join hands and circle around the bonfire as the surrounding scenery spirals into utter madness. The group’s newest recording chapter, Rat Bastard – out Friday, July 17 via Mac’s Record Label – shatters the bondages of obedience, finding Evan Aasen (guitars/voice), Garnet Aronyk Muhammad (bass/voice), Austin Boylan (guitars/voice), and Bennett Smith (drums) gleefully astray across pastures both barren and overgrown.

Sticking to the tradition of naming songs after the band, yet delivering a performance that is anything but conventional, Mock City unleashes the intrinsic grooves and infectious chants of “Mock City Rock.” With crashing tempos that explode out of the speakers, vocals that make an immediate impact on the soul, and some impressive guitar work in between it all, the band’s latest single is a proper introduction to the individuality of Mock City. The nuanced fusion work at play here is layered and carefully curated, separating Mock City from other undefinable bands pasting together tropes for the sake of it. “Mock City Rock” is built with intention and urgency, and every bit of that passion is palpable. From the raw yet lively vocals, down to the subtle neon-tinted synths that close out the track, “Mock City Rock” is as captivating as it gets, and Mock Media is just getting started. With their new album right around the corner, the band delivers a mesmerizing single that adds yet another coal to the furnace of anticipation.
