We’re all big fans of lists. Who isn’t? We Americans love Top Tens, and we love to categorize everything that can be filed away. So every week, in an effort to build community discussion ’round these here parts, I’ll post a random list reflecting my opinions and ask you to provide your own thoughts…

I’m partial to the Grateful Dead playing Van Morrison’s Gloria, RANA’s Thank You For Sending Me An Angel, Phish pulling out Gettin’ Jiggy and Tubthumping within a span of two nights, The Duo on Paranoid Android (repeatedly), Tea Leaf Green busting out Sweet Leaf of Killing In the Name Of, Dylan & The Dead playing The Boy in the Bubble…more to come.
Wait…. Dylan and the Dead played The Boy in the Bubble!?!?!?! I gotta hear that!!
Bob Dylan – Dancing in the Dark
Jesus Bob Dylan sure likes to vary his covers.
Duo used to pull out a “That’s All” by Phil Collins that always took me by surprise.
Phil Collins – severly underrated
“Groovy Kind of Love” and “Tarzan” totally killed his street cred. Watch for a piece on the upcoming Genesis reunion next week.
nice list….id like to hear the dead do nothing else matters.
I hope I’m not overstepping any audio boundaries by submitting this youtube vid of GRAB doing an instrumental jam version of Billie Jean from 7-19-06:

Overstepping what bounds? You’re the man, and you can do what you want…
Scotty, you have the Boy in the Bubble by Dylan & The Dead. I got it from you. (I learned it from watching you, Dad!) Maybe it doesn’t count because it’s from those rehearsals, but check that disc out, it’s a pretty funny version. Musically, very solid, lyrically kinda fucked.
“Scotty, you have the Boy in the Bubble by Dylan & The Dead. I got it from you. (I learned it from watching you, Dad!) ”
unbelievable. Can’t wait to get home and check that out. Graceland was pretty new at that time, props to Zimmerman.
The Raconteurs – Crazy (Gnarls Barkley)
Nickel Creek – Toxic (Britney Spears)
Travis – Baby One More Time (Britney Spears)
Camper van Beethoven – Tusk (Fleetwood Mac)

Great list McL!!!
I remember reading something that a number of bands played Crazy at Lollapalooza. I’d love to hear some of those versions.

DBT doing hey Ya might be the winner here…thanks HB.
And thanks, Monk…I just went back and added it in for Scotty’s list.
How about going back in the day to God Street Wine’s version of Madonna’s “Express Yourself”?
It even made it to their final live release. And it rocks.
and the original out of place cover
William Shatner: Lucy In The Sky With Diamonds
The Gourds doing Gin and Juice by Snoop Dogg always gets me. Ryan Adams doing Wonderwall, but that’s not really random. Warren Haynes doing One by U2 at Bonnaroo in 2002(?). Then again, Warren could cover an old man farting and I’d dig it.
If you pop on iTunes, there’s a set of recordings called “Even better than the real thing” and it’s all Irish musicians doing outrageous covers of popular songs. Along the same lines, I saw Damien Rice’s cello player perform Seven Nation Army as a solo.
Ben Folds doin’ Bitches’ Ain’t Shit. nice.
that’s coming out on his new EP, from what I’ve been told. Seen him do it a few times, it hasn’t gotten old yet.
