Fitz and the Tantrums, Paradise Rock Club Boston, MA – 6/28/13

On a beautiful night in Boston, Fitz and the Tantrums brought their foot stomping Soul/Pop combo to a sold out Paradise Rock Club. At exactly 9:45 PM, the band hit the stage in front of a giant neon heart backdrop and a sea of LED lights.

Michael “Fitz” Fitzpatrick (vocals) and Noelle Scaggs (vocals) danced out to greet the crowd. James King (saxophone and keyboards), Joseph Karnes (bass), John Wicks (drums), and Jeremy Ruzumna (keyboards) took their places with huge smiles and kicked into the piano heavy intro of “Keepin’ Our Eyes Out”. It didn’t take long for the song to reach its first chorus, exclaiming “Reaching out, reaching out!” which is exactly what Fitz and power house co-lead singer Noelle Scaggs did – reaching out to all those that they could. They kept time, waving their hands in the air and singing along with the band while they performed “Don’t Gotta Work it Out”, “Winds of Change” and the anthemic duo “Break the Walls” and “Breakin’ the Chains of Love.”

When Fitz sang, “It’s time we light it up.” He wasn’t kidding. “Spark” raised the intensity of the set with this rocker. Scaggs’ strong vocals and non-stop dancing provided additional energy for the crowd to feed off of. And without missing a beat, the band kicked into a surprising cover of the Eurythmics’ “Sweet Dreams” (which by the way, blew the crowd away) and the hypnotic “House on Fire.”

Fitz’ own vocal talents were given a chance to really shine during “Fools Gold”. Scaggs’ vocals complemented Fitz’ but didn’t over-shadow. By this time, the band was running hot and they gave the audience another treat by playing the potential song of the summer and current single off of this year’s More Than Just A Dream – “Out of My League.”

“6 AM” provided a great platform for Fitz and Scaggs to sing a duet, a la the Mercury/Bowie penned “Under Pressure” – all while engaging in plenty of on-stage interaction. The emotionally charged “Dear Mr. President” followed and then the musical atmosphere changed slightly with the more-mellow “Tighter”. The beat picked up with Summer of Love-psychedelic keyboards “L.O.V.” and “Money Grabber”. The club’s floor was shaking and it wasn’t over yet. The crowd puckered their lips to whistle along to the completely intoxicating “The Walker” which gave the audience yet another catchy chorus to sing, and whistle, along to. Fitz and company finished up the lengthy 17 song set with the dramatic “News 4 You.”
