Jam Fan John Oates Sits In w/ UM

Is John Oates of the the iconic pop-soul band Hall and Oates a closet jam fan? Considering Oates sat in with moe. at the Belly Up in Aspen last Thursday night and followed that up by guesting with Umphrey’s McGee at the same venue last night, we’re thinking he has copies of Junta, Anthem of the Sun and Space Wrangler near his bed.

Oates, who currently lives in the mountain town, lent his talents to a cover of Ain’t No Sunshine, the UM original Linear and the Chicago prog-jammers first-ever version of Chuck Berry’s Let It Rock at the end of last night’s first set. Just as during last week’s appearance with moe., Umphrey’s avoided performing any of the classic Hall and Oates songs for which John is best known, instead preferring to tackle covers and originals by the band he was sitting in with.

In 2010, Oates was exploring the indie rock side of things in performing with the Bird and the Bee at Los Angeles’ El Rey Theatre as part of a tribute to the late H&O bassist T-Bone Wolk. Hall and Oates head to Japan for a five-show tour of the island nation later this month, while Umphrey’s kicks off the 2011 Stew Art Series today at the Fillmore in Denver followed by a two-setter tonight. If John Oates is looking for more jambands to sit in with, might we suggest String Cheese Incident’s Winter Carnival?

  1. rather than sitting in with SCI, he should shit in with a band a gay as Hall & Oates….hmmmm…Disco Biscuits will do just fine!!!

  2. Hey Keif you should work on your English before attempting to make fun of anyone jackass. That being said, they should have played Maneater.

  3. that’s unpossible.

Keif, i think it’;s cool that some ’80 performers are into the jam scene. Huey Lewis rocked it when he sat in with UM. I’m sure the Oats’ sit-in is as cool.
