Postcards From Page Side: Kimock All-Stars

Another rare treat was Point of No Return, a song best known for Kimock’s days in KVHW, another supergroup of All-Stars. An ending segment that included Happy Days are Here Again, with Kimock’s son, John Morgan, sitting in didn’t seem to miss a beat. All the while as this band bobbed and weaved, Kimock continued to fire when needed by lighting up the fret board and was complimented nicely by Benevento on the organ/keys, especially when he threw in his signature tweaks and turns of his knobs that added sonic, electronic soundscapes. A late set quote of Benevento’s Real Morning Party was a perfect example of how each of these four musicians brought their own personalities to the fold.

Rounding things out with a spirited take on The Beatles’ I Feel Fine, which again showcased some smiles and interplay between Kimock and Benevento, this night was all about the common mentality of four craftsmen simply getting together, plugging in and seeing what happened. While I’ve seen some amazing, All-Star combos on paper fall short on stage, this lineup came through and delivered an enjoyable, free-form and at times blazing effort that those lucky enough to be in attendance won’t soon forget. Rounded out with another Kimock tune, Merle’s Boogie, the band really brought things to an exclamation point conclusion.

While this show may not seem like the greatest thing since sliced bread when reading this review, I assure it it was more representative of the power of live music in a small, NYC club on a Wednesday night. It also shows the ability of a superstar lineup from different schools and mentalities to put their own egos aside and gel into a single unit, while managing to add their own touches and signatures to remind you that they are still there. And then there is Kimock, who over the past three or so years has really taken a liking to playing with anyone under the sun (much like his Jam Cruise, Jam Room leader mentality). In the end, this lineup was one I’d see again and welcome all of you to give a listen and look below.
