Friday Mix Tape: Name Droppers Reprise

A few weeks ago, my good friend DaveO dedicated his Friday Mix Tape playlist to songs that dropped the names of other songs in its lyrics. To take DaveO’s concept off on a little tangent, I am going with songs that name drop other artist names right there in the title.

There seems to be a pattern surrounding David Bowie, who appears on this list three separate times – twice as subject and once as artist. Phish’s other worldly monster 12-29-94 Bowie from Providence is one of the band’s most ferocious jams ever. On the complete other end of the “tribute to Bowie” spectrum is the Flight of the Concords ode to their favorite space oddity.

Bob Dylan is also referenced twice, including the oddly titled Wilco song Bob Dylan’s 49th Beard, which features Jeff Tweedy at his mellow, acoustic best. LCD Soundsystem’s Daft Punk is Playing at My House was one of the highlights of the band’s recent farewell show and is guaranteed to make you shake your ass a bit. The Flaming Lips have the oddest song on the list, which isn’t really a surprise since they are the one of the oddest groups out there. Weezer, also featured in DaveO’s playlist, made an outstanding Happy Days themed video for Buddy Holly.

Tracks from Cake and MGMT round out this week’s list.
