Grousing The Aisles: Perpetual Groove Tackles Sweet Oblivious Antidote

Perpetual Groove 04/23/2011 SBD Matrix [FLAC, MP3, Stream]

Back in 2003 Perpetual Groove put out their first album with keyboardist Matt McDonald and drummer Albert Suttle entitled Sweet Oblivious Antidote. Last weekend the band played a surprise show in their original hometown of Savannah, GA and performed Sweet Oblivious Antidote in its entirety featuring guitarist Brock Butler on acoustic. Thanks to taper Joel Hudson we can all stream or download a matrix recording of this memorable gig.

The show, which took place at Loco’s, a venue the band outgrew in 2004 after many PGroove performances (though they’ve been back for the occasional surprise show), started with an acoustic set by Butler before his band mates joined him to play all of Sweet Oblivious Antidote for the second set. Classic PGroove songs such as Three Weeks, Teakwood Betz and Robot Waltz have such a different tone and feel to them with Brock on acoustic.

Each tune is extended from the album version as Three Weeks clocks in at 24:55, Sundog nears 20 minutes and Playground extends just past the 15-minute mark. A cover of the Talking Heads’ This Must Be The Place (Naive Melody) was the encore – the icing on an already delicious cake.

Unfortunately, you can hear the audience chattering throughout the performance which hinders the quality of the recording. Don’t let the annoying crowd stop you from downloading or streaming this show as getting to hear the music included within is well worth it.
