PT: Emmylou Strikes A Hard Bargain

To say that Emmylou Harris has had a profound impact on roots music may be a bit of an understatement. Over the last 40 years Harris has put out 20 studio albums of her own along with collaborations featuring everyone from Neil Young to Dolly Parton to Conor Oberst. She’s even got a Wikipedia page dedicated to tracking her collaborations, which reads like a who’s who of rock, country and folk. That’s not even mentioning her famous partnership with Gram Parsons, who helped launch her career, as she sung alongside Gram on his two critically acclaimed solo albums, G.P. and Grievous Angel.

Late last month Harris released her 21st studio album Hard Bargainvia Nonesuch Records. The 13-song collection features 11 originals, including tributes to Parsons (The Road) and to folk singer Kate McGarrigle (Darlin’ Kate). Let’s check out her music video for Goodnight Old World…

Emmylou Harris will take part in two tribute shows celebrating the life of Kate McGarrigle at New York City’s Town Hall on May 12 and 13, before heading out for a world tour. The lengthy run includes a high profile gig at Central Park’s SummerStage with the Levon Helm Band on July 18.
