For most of us, the word “reprise” brings to mind one thing, Tweezer Reprise. But there have been plenty of other uses of the reprise over the years. For this week’s Friday Mix Tape, we’ll take a listen to some other clever uses of the device, which can refer to to either a recurrence of a song in its original form or to a return with slightly different, but similar motifs.
We kick it off with the inspiration for the collection, Chalk Dust Torture Reprise. While Phish actually debuted the catchy Chalk Dust Reprise on December 10, 1994, it’s this version which closed the show at Deer Creek on July 10, 2000 that cemented it in Phish lore, as it includes the now famous, “We are The Phish from Vermont” banter. Next, we have a short Moth Reprise from moe.’s Warts and All Volume One and a pair from the Grateful Dead – a high spirited double-back to Good Lovin’ and their popular reprise tune, Playing in the Band. From there, we have the Ringo Reprise from Umphrey’s McGee’s Live at the Murat.
A couple of studio reprises follow, as Pearl Jam revisits Life Wasted and Dave Matthews includes a stealth reprise of the Last Stop (with Bela Fleck) as a hidden track at the very end of Before These Crowded Streets. Finally, we wrap up with one of the three Tweezer Reprises played within a 24 hour time span from last summer.
