Our recent interview with Josh Clark of Tea Leaf Green touched on the touchy subject of being labeled a “jamband” and there’s little doubt the debate will continue for some time. It is nice to see authors outside of the typical jamband community standing up for improvisation in rock and roll while calling out their peers for being lazy with their modifiers. Or maybe we’ll just have to start calling anything that stretches into improv territory post-new-psyche-jam-wave.

  1. Yes!!! new-psyche-jam-wave! or for old people like me a jamband. For even older people like my dad a rock band. Its a compliment Says you are original muscians that play music off the beaten path, and have the skills to pull it off. Other than that, unless you are electronic, you are just a rock band. Thats what a jamband is. A very talented rock band with other outside influences with TALENT. A lot of bands can jam but it takes talent to be a jamband. NEW-PSYCHE-JAM-WAVE!

  2. Nice post. I enjoyed Rob Mitchum’s piece too. I would be interested in listening to a playlist of non-jamband indie bands that jam. As someone who isn’t familiar with the indie scene (even Velvet Underground), it sounds like it would be a fun listen. I do know however that Battles does indeed rock my face.
