Picture Show: Widespread Panic @ Orpheum

Widespread Panic @ Orpheum Theater – October 25

Returning to the stage after three-night run in Milwaukee over the weekend, Widespread Panic had a few days to rest before playing at the historic Orpheum Theater in downtown Minneapolis on Tuesday night. There is always the question, can the band keep up the momentum of the multi-show run? But fans pre-show predictions ran true, “…they always throw down in Minnesota!”

Coming out firing with Heroes was a perfect way to start off the set as the band got comfortable. Once they found their way into Hatfield, the crowd started to get what they came for. A fun first set came to a peak with the North > Jam > Jack run with Jimmy Herring tearing up the segue into Henry Parsons Died for a strong close to the set.

Now that they’d stretched their legs a bit, it was time to let it all hang out in the second set. Opening with Give found Jimmy right back in full shred mode as JB was feeding him though the jam. Diner built up the energy thanks to a funky jam featuring keyboardist John “JoJo” Hermann and bassist Dave Schools. Maybe it was my position against the stage, but throughout the set Schools’ bass was thunderous, if not teeth rattling at times.

Finding their way out of Second Skin, the band was in full-on heavy rock mode and they didn’t let up with the dark jams for the rest of the show. Finishing the second set with an intense Protein Drink > Sewing Machine, it was clear this wasn’t your average skirt twirling hippie band. These boys were here to rock Minneapolis hard and they did just that. They even made sure to stamp the encore with yet even more…Rock.
