Maceo’s Clarence Clemons Tribute Axed For Whitney

When legendary singer Whitney Houston died on Saturday night, the producers of last night’s Grammys had to restructure the show to accommodate a tribute to the Newark, New Jersey native. Unfortunately a tribute to another musical legend who spent time living in Newark – the late saxophonist Clarence Clemons of the E Street Band – was dropped.

News of the cut segment was revealed in a Facebook status update from fellow sax icon Maceo Parker. “Thanks so much or all your messages and tweets about the GRAMMYs. I can now reveal that I was asked to perform a Clarence Clemmons (sic) tribute and then it got dropped to accommodate the tribute to Whitney Houston.” While we certainly understand the producers needed to work a Whitney tribute into the broadcast, we wish they would’ve axed Chris Brown’s performance instead. Parker and Clemons were both featured on the track Saxman from Dave Koz’s 1993 Lucky Man LP.
