Pullin’ ‘Tubes: Neil Young’s Journeys + Jesus Chariot

Neil Young and Jonathan Demme’s relationship stretches all the back to 1992, when the Rock & Roll Hall Of Famer contributed the song Philadelphia to the soundtrack for the director’s Academy Award nominated film by the same name. In recent years the duo have teamed up for a a planned trilogy of intimately shot docu-concert films featuring the oft cantankerous singer-songwriter. The first was 2006’s Heart Of Gold, which focused on Young’s two-night stand at the Ryman Auditorium in April of 2005, where he premiered songs from Prairie Wind, playing the album in its entirety. They followed that up with 2010’s the Neil Young Trunk Show that captured a 2007 concert at the Tower Theater, in Philadelphia during Young’s Chrome Dreams II tour and featured a number of rare tunes that had been dusted off for the run.

On June 29, Young and Demme will release Journeys, the final chapter of their collaborative endeavor. The film documents Young’s two-night run at Toronto’s historic Massey Hall during his 2011 solo acoustic/electric tour in support of Le Noise. In addition to the live performances, which once again mixes his classic material with new tunes, the doc also follows Young on a road trip back to his hometown in rural Omemee, Ontario.
