My Morning Jacket Move On Up at Red Rocks with John Oates, Ben Bridwell and Trombone Shorty & Orleans Avenue

Okay, we admit it. Towards the end of last year we started to lose a little faith as My Morning Jacket played similar sets at most shows. However, the Spontaneous Curation series in which fans help choose this year’s setlists has paid major dividends – and special guests don’t hurt either. Last night at Red Rocks MMJ delivered a monster performance that was seen by many of those at home thanks to a AXS.tv broadcast. By the time the marathon three and a half hour show was over, the Louisville based band had welcomed Band of Horses’ front man Ben Bridwell, John Oates of Hall and Oates as well as Trombone Shorty and members of Orleans Avenue to rock the famous venue with them.

As promised, MMJ didn’t repeat any songs during the two-night stand which left room for bust outs such as originals Xmas Curtain, I Will Be There When You Die, They Ran and Where To Begin as well as covers Isn’t It A Pity by George Harrison, performed with the help of Bridwell, Velvet Underground’s Oh! Sweet Nuthin’ and Curtis Mayfield’s Move On Up. As expected, John Oates made a guest spot as he helped out on Move On Up along Trombone Shorty and members of his Orleans Avenue outfit. Shorty and his band mates stuck around for Dancefloors before MMJ put a stamp on the weekend with One Big Holiday.

  1. Well you can hear it. Email [email protected] and let them know you were at the 8/4 show and they will within 48 hours send you a download code for the entire 3.5 hours show. Put Red Rocks 12 in the subject line. Enjoy!

  2. When MMJ released the audio of Red Rocks 11 to roll call members they used the word legendary to describe the show. What superlatives are they going to use to describe the two nights I just saw? I was at 11 but this past weekend was amazing. 12/7/97 Phish just got dethroned as the best concert I ever saw.
