Senate Rejects Oil Drilling In Alaska
Overshadowed by the U.S. recent strike against Iraq, the U.S. Senate narrowly rejected oil drilling in the Alaska wildlife refuge Wednesday. Development of the millions of barrels of oil beneath the 100-mile coastal plain of the Arctic National Wildlife Refuge in northeastern Alaska has been a key part of President Bush’s energy plan. Environmentalists contended drilling there would jeopardize a pristine area valued for its wildlife. All but five Democrats voted against refuge drilling. There were eight Republicans who joined the Democrats in favor of barring oil companies from the refuge.

Bonnie Raitt Acoustic Show in Boston
In one of the more unique benefit causes of late, Bonnie Raitt will be performing an acoustic show at the Orpheum Theatre in Boston with John Mayer and other special guests on April 26th. The all-acoustic show will raise funds for the organization, which aims to protect migratory songbirds through the preservation of traditional coffee- growing methods. Many coffee growers in Latin America are switching from traditional “shade-grown” methods to higher-yield “sun-grown” coffee production tactics. The switch affects the natural habitats of many migratory songbirds. After performing his hit “Your Body Is A Wonderland” at his first Grammy Ceremony a couple weeks ago, Mayer said he was singing to Raitt, a longtime fan of his. Tickets for the concert, priced at $50 for reserved seats, go on sale March 28 via Ticketmaster. Special “gold and silver circle” packages are available; call 800-728-6223 for more information.
