Jacob Fred are on top of their game, a group that just keeps developing into new, refreshing directions while always paying tribute to the jazz masters. Fittingly Hass reminded the audience near the end of the set to remember to, “listen to a little jazz everyday.”

Sonic Youth: Higher Ground, South Burlington, VT – 2/18/07
It’s hard to believe that Sonic Youth – whose two lead members Thurston Moore and Kim Gordon live in nearby Northampton, MA – haven’t yet made the trip up Interstate 91 to play in Burlington, Vermont. The stars aligned and the seminal indie band made a first-time trip to the Green Mountain State for a visit to Higher Ground.
Brothers Past: OM to BP
Back in June, Brothers Past announced that a line-up change was in the works. Long-time drummer Rick Lowenberg had decided to go back to school to study law and environmental issues and a new drummer, Ilya Stemkovsky, was announced as the replacement. Dropping into Vermont four shows into their 13 show tour, Medeski, Scofield, Martin and Wood truly gave the goods during their two set performance. They pillaged through tunes from both of the albums they’ve recorded together, 1998’s A Go Go, and the brand new, Out Louder.

New York Doll: Directed by Greg Whitely
New York Doll tells a story that touches the soul as the band prepares for their reunion show after 30 years. Arthur “Killer” Kane is as lovable character as there is and one is left wondering what could have been if the boys could have worked out there problems instead of breaking their band. They directly influenced so many bands that include The Clash, The Pretenders, The Sex Pistols and so many others would not be what they were if it were not for the New York Dolls. “Too Much Too Soon,” a great title for their second album and a great description of what happened to those young impressionable New York Dolls when fame was knocking at their lip stick laden, glittery front door.

The Slip 9/21/2005: Higher Ground – South Burlington, VT
The Slip have slowly been developing its distinct sound and style since the mid-nineties. The three-piece, made up of Brad Barr on guitars and lead vocals, Andrew Barr on drums and percussion and Marc Friedman on bass, have earned a strong dedicated following in that has been continually growing. Their sound spans everything from free-form jazz to almost pop-flavored power rock tunes and everything in between. A few days into their fall tour, The Slip stopped by Burlington to play a performance that at times, felt like a cozy family dinner and at others a timeless space voyage.

The Brothers Past, three days into a month long tour, hit Burlington with a hard punch to the head. The show at Higher Ground was a duel headlining gig with The New Deal. Both sides of the club would take turns presenting each band back to back, and his night really exemplified why having two “clubs” in one for Higher Ground can make live music so interesting.
