Friday highlights include a late-afternoon set by Garaj Mahal, two sets each by Tim O
Gov’t Mule Get High And Mighty
Big riffs, massive grooves, expansive improvisations, and well-crafted songwriting are Gov’t Mule’s calling cards, and all come to the fore on August 22 when ATO Records releases the band’s latest studio recording, “High & Mighty”.
Featuring twelve new songs from Haynes’ pen, “High & Mighty” features the band’s trademark high-energy rock ‘n roll. At the same time it expands into the realms of reggae, folk, blues, soul and jazz with a universal appeal that stubbornly refuses to be categorized.
For over a decade, the band – guitarist/vocalist Warren Haynes, drummer Matt Abts, keyboard player Danny Louis, and bassist Andy Hess – have earned the respect of their peers, fans, and critics with their thunderous live shows and acclaimed CD’s. HIGH & MIGHTY, produced by Haynes and Gordie Johnson (former leader of Canada’s Big Sugar), continues that tradition, showcasing group improvisations within the structure of memorable original songs.
“We took the interplay that happens on stage and utilized it to create something magical in the studio,” says Haynes. “Even within the structures of some of the more straight-ahead rock songs, this band plays with a jazz sensibility.”
That responsiveness makes “High & Mighty” big in both scope and sound. The disc boasts an urgent, in-your-face sound that befits Haynes’ lyrical tales of characters encumbered by guilt, pain and regret. In a world where music often sounds calculated, Gov’t Mule’s songs are jam-packed with heart and soul.
With the release of “High & Mighty”, Gov’t Mule will take to the road, with dates with the Allman Brothers Band through Labor Day Weekend. Headlining dates on the “High & Mighty” tour will include opening acts Wolfmother and Donovan Frankenreiter. Below is a complete list of Gov’t Mule tour dates, including a European leg, dates with the Dave Matthews Band, and headlining famed Colorado venue Red Rocks for the third time.

Interpol Begins Work On Third Album
Interpol has been working for the past six months on material it hopes will appear on its third album, according to a post on the band’s infrequently updated Web site. “We did break up — four times — but that’s all behind us now,” the message reads.
As for new songs, the band says, “We’ve got one gem in the works entitled ‘The Heinrich Maneuver.’ And another that was called ‘Pawn Shop.’ But that’s called something else now. Having yet to record, we can only say that [the new album] will come sometime next year.”
While the music may be taking shape, Interpol’s contract status is murky. Its 2004 album, “Antics,” was its last under contract with Matador, and sources say no decision has yet been made on whether a label change is in the cards.
In related news, Interpol drummer Sam Fogarino recently guested on sessions with California band Oslo while the latter was recording in New York.

Medeski, Scofield, Martin & Wood Releasing Album & Planning Tour
On September 26, Indirecto Records releases “Out Louder”, the improvisation-fueled date from John Medeski, John Scofield, Billy Martin, & Chris Wood. It is the inaugural release for Medeski Martin & Wood’s Indirecto label. “Out Louder” is jam-packed with irresistible grooves and spontaneous improvisation, music made not above nor below, but rather in some altogether hipper place.
Medeski Scofield Martin & Wood first recorded together on Scofield’s “A Go Go” (Verve 1998), a disc that has become a must-have classic. That project united jazz guitarist Scofield with the eclectic improvisational jazz trio Medeski Martin & Wood on material composed by Scofield and interpreted by all four musicians.
“Out Louder”, however, is a genuine four-way collaboration between Medeski Scofield Martin & Wood. “‘A Go Go'” was John’s record and we were essentially sidemen, where “Out Louder” musically comes from all of us” explains Wood.
Scofield adds that much of the material was composed when the foursome “would play free stuff, listen back, make a song out of it, and then go back with that idea in mind and play free again.”
Recorded in under a week at Shacklyn, MMW’s fabled downtown Brooklyn studio, “Out Louder” reeks of the scruffy, spirited basement in which it was created. There’s the undeniably funky “Little Walter Rides Again,” the free jazz excursions of “Miles Behind,” and the improvisation-rich take on Peter Tosh’s reggae anthem “Legalize It.” This is music not of this world, yet rooted in the earth tones of jazz, funk, and blues. Music from the heart, for the mind, and made to shake the earth, not to mention the body.
And there is more to come, as Medeski Scofield Martin & Wood embark on their first-ever tour (dates to come), showcasing their collaborative, instinctive sound. Look for them to perform music from “Out Louder” and “A Go Go, with several yet-to-be-released tunes poised to be thrown into the mix.
Pink Floyd Founder Syd Barrett Dies
Syd Barrett, who founded Pink Floyd but later lived as a recluse, has died at the age of 60, according to a spokeswoman for the band.
A spokeswoman for Pink Floyd told the Press Association: “He died very peacefully a couple of days ago. There will be a private family funeral.”
The singer and guitarist, born Roger Keith Barrett, wrote many of the early hits for the avant-garde rock band, including the 1967 album “The Piper at the Gates of Dawn” and the band’s first hit singles, “Arnold Layne” and “See Emily Play.”
His behavior became erratic, though, and he left the band in 1968. He was replaced by David Gilmour, who had joined the band as its fifth member earlier that year.
Barrett also put out two noted solo albums, “The Madcap Laughs” and “Barrett,” both in 1970.
In 1975, during the recording of Pink Floyd’s “Wish You Were Here” album, Barrett showed up unannounced at the studio — ironically, during the recording of “Shine On You Crazy Diamond,” a song about him. He had become overweight and shaved his eyebrows; the other members didn’t recognize him at first.
Much of British psychedelic music was influenced by Barrett, and a number of musicians have credited him, according to Allmusic.com.
Barrett had since lived in anonymity in the eastern English city of Cambridge.
The spokeswoman said a low-key, private funeral would be held. She did not disclose the cause of death.

Wilco, Buddy Guy, Al Green Among Artists To Perform At Tall Stacks Festival
With the announcement of this year
ISWHAT?! Drops New Album
On August 31, 2006, ISWHAT?! will release ‘The Life We Chose,’ featuring 14 brand new tracks bursting at the seams with pith and vinegar. The album signals a major evolution for ISWHAT?!, which is assisted in no small part by its guest artists who bring a broad spectrum of sonic colors and styles to the table. However, in the end it’s the giant steps made by Napoleon Maddox and Jack Walker at their respective crafts that makes their long-awaited follow up so extraordinary.
‘The Life We Chose’ is a fierce, modern hip-hop statement. And concurrently, it’s a progressive, forward-looking jazz record. Created by a one-of-a-kind pairing of artists who are not at all inclined to allow the inimitability of such a combination carry the day, they deliver music of purpose, conviction and inspiration. In the words of one of Napoleon Maddox’s heroes Chuck D., it’s a collection of songs meant to “Fight the Power.” In the spirit of one of Jack Walker’s heroes Rahsaan Roland Kirk, it’s music created as a “Theme For The Eulipions.”
Van Morrison Plans Rare U.S. Dates
Van Morrison will take a break from his current European schedule to play several upcoming shows in the US as the legendary singer continues to support his most recent disc, the country-heavy “Pay the Devil.”
Morrison will kick off his short round of US dates Aug. 5 in Philadelphia, following that up with three additional eastern dates. After another round of overseas touring, Morrison will return in September for three more shows on the West Coast, beginning with a Sept. 12 appearance in Berkeley, CA.
The September dates will include Morrison’s slot at the Austin City Limits Festival in Austin, TX.
Morrison’s complete European itinerary can be found at his website.
“Pay the Devil” includes 12 covers of country classics, among them Hank Williams’ “Your Cheatin’ Heart” and “Things Have Gone to Pieces,” originally performed by George Jones. The set–the follow-up to 2005’s “Magic Time”–also features three original compositions.
The 58-year-old singer has also released a live DVD containing five songs from the new album shot during his performance earlier this year at Nashville’s Ryman Auditorium. The DVD will be packaged with new pressings of “Pay the Devil.” A preview video from the disc is available for viewing at Morrison’s website.
Morrison became a solo star in the late ’60s and early ’70s; his best-known albums include “Astral Weeks,” “Moondance” and “Tupelo Honey.”
A native of Belfast, Northern Ireland, Morrison was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 1993.

My Morning Jacket Covers The Band, Prepping Live Album & DVD
My Morning Jacket recently trekked to Woodstock, N.Y., to record a cover of the Band’s “It Makes No Difference” for a star-studded Band tribute album, due Jan. 9 via Savoy Jazz. The catch: the song was put to tape at the studio of the Band’s drummer, Levon Helm, bringing MMJ’s members face to face with one of their musical idols.
As for My Morning Jacket, the band has just been added to the lineup for next month’s Lollapalooza festival in Chicago and will re-team with Pearl Jam as an opening act for 11 September dates on the latter’s first European tour since 2000.
As previously reported, an MMJ live album and DVD, “Okonokos,” will be separately released in the fall. The double-disc CD is due Sept. 26, while the DVD will arrive Oct. 31 and will also be screened at select U.S. movie theaters. Eschewing the straight-up “film the show” approach, the latter follows a storyline that transports fans to an MMJ show in the middle of a forest.

Sufjan Stevens Embarking On Symphonic Fall Tour
For the first time in over a year, Sufjan Stevens is going on tour, bringing with him a talented group of musicians and friends including a small string ensemble (ranging from four to eight members in different cities) and brass section.
They will perform a repertoire of familiar songs from Seven Swans, Michigan and Illinois in a new symphonic context. This tour is not a promotional tour for The Avalanche, Stevens’ latest CD of Illinois outtakes, but instead a chance for Stevens to showcase his compositions in a more formal atmosphere. The tour will bring Sufjan and his ensemble to some of the country’s finest theaters, including Nashville’s esteemed Ryman and Los Angeles’ historic Wiltern. Almost all of these shows will be seated, with three exceptions.
The pomp and pageantry of the previous Illinoisemakers tour will be augmented by a nuance, mastery and sophistication of talented new players. But don’t expect to see any cheerleading uniforms or routines. Suit coats, neckties and corsages might be more appropriate; but we aren’t about to issue a dress code. Sufjan will also be performing five to six new songs on the tour.
Supporting the tour will be My Brightest Diamond, a moniker for the talented singer-songwriter Shara Worden. Shara has toured extensively in Sufjan’s band, appears on his recordings, and is often his right-hand woman. Shara is also a close friend, creative peer and Brooklyn neighbor to Sufjan.

CBGB To Close September 30th
CB’s, as it is universally and fondly known, opened its doors in 1973, making it NYC’s oldest continuously-operating rock venue. Owner Hilly Kristal originally intended the club to showcase country, bluegrass and blues (hence the acronym), but the lack of places for unsigned bands to perform in New York at the time made CB’s a magnet for the punk and art-rock scenes that were emerging downtown. Throughout the 70’s, such seminal artists as The Ramones, Talking Heads, Blondie, The Patti Smith Group, Television and Suicide performed at CB’s regularly, and the club served as an incubator for what would become the most influential music of the era.
When punk metamorphosed into hardcore in the 80’s, CB’s remained on the city’s cutting edge, offering a home for The Gorilla Biscuits, Agnostic Front, The Cro-Mags, Sick Of It All, H20, Murphy’s Law, Leeway and the other pillars of the NYHC movement.
As the New York nightlife industry grew bigger and more cutthroat in the 90’s, CB’s remained an endearingly stubborn throwback, sticking firm to the open-door booking policy that first welcomed its inaugural class of rebels – whoever you are, whatever you do, your band can play at CBGB. In a downtown scene increasingly governed by fashion and status, CB’s has zealously adhered to the formula that made it meaningful, by refusing to apply stylistic filters to its bookings, welcoming all comers to sink or swim on their own merits.
A much-publicized altercation with their landlord in mid-2005 led to an a star-studded benefit concert in Washington Square Park, and even Mayor Bloomberg vocally led his support to the little club that had developed, over the decades, into a globally-recognized cultural institution.
However, despite the universal outpouring of love, and numerous attempts to resolve the matter legally, Kristal has been unable to arrive at terms with the building’s owner, and a three-decade musical legacy will come to an end in just a few short months.
Fittingly, steadfastly independent New York concert promoters Rocks Off have signed on to book CBGB’s closing festival, set to take place throughout August and September. They are in touch with many of the artists who made CB’s famous, and are hard at work putting together a final schedule that will do justice to the club’s enduring impact in the many varieties of rock and roll it has helped to cultivate throughout the years.
Queens of the Stone Age Start Work On New Album
Josh Homme has revealed that Queens Of The Stone Age have started work on their new album.
The singer, currently working with his other band Eagles Of Death Metal, told NME.COM Queens are currently writing new material in the studio, but refused to divulge the line-up of the band.
He said: “That’s not a healthy question. You’ll ruin the surprise. We’ve gotta keep our cool.”

Farm Aid Plants Down In Camden
The 19th annual Farm Aid benefit will be held Sept. 30 at the Tweeter Center in Camden, N.J., just across the Delaware River from downtown Philadelphia. Farm Aid co-founders Neil Young, Willie Nelson and John Mellencamp will perform, as will Dave Matthews. Tickets go on sale July 14 to members of the FarmYard club and July 22 to the general public.
Young announced the details today (July 6) during a press conference at Philadelphia’s Reading Terminal Market. “It is unfortunate that we have to continue doing this,” he said. “I really hope that we don’t have to do Farm Aid forever.”

The Planet Drum 2006 Tour reunites Mickey Hart, Zakir Hussain, Sikiru Adepoju, and Giovanni Hidalgo for a September series of West Coast shows in celebration of the 15th anniversary of the ground-breaking album of that name. Planet Drum was released in 1991 on the Rykodisc label and went on to earn the first-ever Grammy in the World Music category. The tour is the groups first in almost a decade. It also marks the resumption of an artistic relationship
Tom Waits Plans Rare U.S. Tour
Iconic singer/songwriter Tom Waits will hit the road in August for a rare string of live performances. The eight-date tour will take Waits to some cities he hasn’t played in three decades. The details of the artist’s touring band are still being worked out, according to a spokesperson.
“We need to go to Tennessee to pick up some fireworks, and someone owes me money in Kentucky,” Waits said in a statement about his motivation for touring.
Waits played a handful of shows in 2004 but prior to that had not toured widely since 1999, in support of his album “Mule Variations.”
And while there’s no word of a new album from Waits, Anti- Records is at work on a long-awaited boxed set. No release date has been nailed down, according to the artist’s rep.
Waits will also be seen in two dramas set for theatrical release next year: “The Good Heart” alongside Ryan Gosling and “Texas Lullaby” with John Malkovich and Josh Hartnett, which is loosely based on William Shakespeare’s “Hamlet.”

Third Annual Bob Dylan Summer Minor League Baseball Park Tour
Bob Dylan will set off on his third annual tour of U.S. minor league baseball stadiums beginning Aug. 12 in Comstock Park, Mich. Tickets begin going on sale July 8 for some shows; one child under 12 will be admitted free of charge with each adult ticket holder.
Dylan will be supported on the road by guitarists Jimmie Vaughan and Junior Brown, as well as Elana Janes and the Continental Two. As previously reported, the tour will coincide with Aug. 29 release of a new Dylan studio album, “Modern Times.”
In related news, a baseball-themed episode from Dylan’s weekly XM Satellite Radio show “Theme Time Radio Hour” has been added to the National Baseball Hall of Fame Library archive. On the show, Dylan sang an a cappella rendition of “Take Me Out to the Ballgame” and played several iconic radio snippets from vintage baseball broadcasts.
