Willie Nelson’s Complete Atlantic Sessions Boxed Set Due
On June 20th, Rhino Records will release a Willie Nelson 3-CD boxed set, The Complete Atlantic Sessions.
This 3-CD boxed set is the first to spotlight Willie’s historic Atlantic output in its entirety. Disc one presents 1973’s David Briggs/Arif Mardin-produced debut Shotgun Willie, remastered and expanded with 12 bonus tracks. Disc two presents Willie’s first concept album, 1974’s Jerry Wexler-produced Phases And Stages, remastered and expanded with ten bonus tracks. Disc three presents the Wexler-produced in-concert classic Live At The Texas Opry House, expanded with five bonus tracks.
The legendary career of Texas-born music icon Willie Nelson has spanned six decades. He first rose to fame as a Nashville-based songwriter, penning many now-timeless standards, including “Crazy,” a smash hit for Patsy Cline. Feeling constrained by the Nashville establishment, Willie relocated to Austin, Texas, in the early 1970s, where the merging of rock and country audiences made a huge impression on him. He began fusing folk and roots-rock with a rebellious “outlaw” country flavor, inventing an authentic, stripped-down sound that remains vastly influential. At this pivotal point in his evolution, Willie signed to Atlantic Records, delivering two signature studio albums revered as all-time masterpieces: Shotgun Willie and Phases And Stages. This boxed set presents Live At The Texas Opry House, recorded during the same period, as a stand-alone disc for the first time ever.

Wailer, who last released the album Communication in 2000, is the lone surviving member of the Wailers. Marley died of cancer in 1981; Tosh was murdered in 1987.

Particle To Launch Fall Tour
Los Angeles band Particle will give North American audiences a taste of its new sound this summer, with tour dates booked into early October.
The concerts include June and July dates in the Western U.S., with Detroit, Chicago and Cleveland on the map for August. A cross-country run is booked for September, followed by dates in Ohio and North Carolina the following month.
The group will be joined by the U.K.’s Ozric Tentacles for a handful of shows in mid-July. The itinerary also includes gigs with Soulive and Blues Traveler.
The band will be playing Street Scene in San Diego on July 4, and the very next day they’re at Lollapalooza in Chicago. Two more prestigious festival stops – Bumbershoot in Seattle and Summerfest in Milwaukee – are also on the schedule.
Particle – which fuses rock, funk and electronic elements into a jammy style it calls “funktronic” – added vocals for the first time last year with the addition of new members Ben Combe and Scott Metzger, who both play guitar and sing.
Combe and Metzger replaced former guitarist Charlie Hitchcock, who either left or was kicked out in early 2005, depending who you ask.
In July, the band will release a double-disc concert CD and full-length DVD titled Transformations Live, which documents its first shows as a five-piece earlier this year.

Billy Preston Dies After Long Illness
The great singer-songwriter and performer Billy Preston, the real “Fifth Beatle,” has died after a long illness as a result of malignant hypertension that resulted in kidney failure and other complications.
As a result of a medical insult, he’d been in a deep coma since last November 21, but was still struggling to recover. He died at Shea Scottsdale Hospital in Scottsdale, Ariz., where he’d lived for the last couple of years.
Billy was called the Fifth Beatle because he played keyboards on “Let It Be,” “The White Album” and “Abbey Road.” He also played on the Rolling Stones’ hit song “Miss You,” and often played with Eric Clapton. He also did the organ work on Sly & the Family Stone’s greatest hits.
Preston’s own hits include “Nothing From Nothing,” “Will It Go Round in Circles” and “You Are So Beautiful,” which Joe Cocker turned into an international hit.
