20 Years Ago Today – Country & Western Guitar Legend Chet Atkins Dies at Age 77 (Watch “Instrumental Medley” With Mark Knopfler Live ’87)

20 years ago today (6/30/01), country & western guitar legend Chet Atkins died at age 77. A record company executive who is often credited with developing the Nashville Sound, Atkins had a signature picking style that still sound as cool today as it did back then. Among many honors, Atkins received 14 Grammy Awards as well as the Grammy Lifetime Achievement Award, nine Country Music Association Instrumentalist of the Year awards, and was inducted into the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame, Country Music Hall of Fame and Museum and the Musicians Hall of Fame and Museum.
