20 Years Ago Today: The New Pornographers Release Debut LP ‘Mass Romantic’ (Listen to “The Slow Descent into Alcoholism”)

20 years ago today (11/21/00), The New Pornographers released their debut LP Mass Romantic. At this point in the game, the Canadian collective contained three lead members that had already semi-established themselves as formidable forces prior: Dan Bejar (Destroyer), AC Newman (Zumpano), and Neko Case (Neko Case & Her Boyfriends).

Mass Romantic kicks off with the dominating keyboard pop of “The Slow Descent into Alcoholism” and the rest of the album kicks off one of the most underrated power-pop catalogs in rock history, which is now eight albums deep and going. Check out the later mentioned, “The Slow Descent into Alcoholism”..
