20 years ago today (4/8/06), The Rolling Stones finally made their long-awaited debut in mainland China, taking the stage in Shanghai—more than four decades after forming. Ahead of the show, authorities requested the band remove five songs from the setlist—“Brown Sugar,” “Honky Tonk Woman,” “Beast of Burden,” “Let’s Spend the Night Togeth20 er,” and “Rough Justice”—due to their suggestive lyrics. Not that it slowed them down; with a catalog that deep, the Stones had plenty left in the tank.
Watch them tear through “It’s Only Rock ’n Roll” from that historic night..
