25 Years Ago Today – Brad Nowell of Sublime Dies At 28 – Just Before Breakout LP Release (Watch “Badfish” Live ’95)

25 years ago today (5/25/96) Brad Nowell, the frontman for Sublime, died at the age of 28 from a heroin overdose in San Francisco, California. Unfortunately, the timing couldn’t be worse as Nowell passed right before the release of Sublime’s self-titled major-label debut. The album has songs that you’ve probably heard millions of times by just being alive – and it went five-times platinum. In addition to “What I Got”, the album included several popular ‘posthumous’ singles including “Santeria”, “Doin’ Time”, “Wrong Way” and “April 29, 1992 (Miami)”, all of which has spurned a generation of Sublime sound-a-like bands. Watch Sublime perform “Badfish” live from 1995.
