25 years ago today (9/16/97), Buena Vista Social Club released its self-titled album, one of the most recognizable world music albums of recent times. Produced by Ry Cooder and directed by Juan de Marcos González this recording from the ensemble of Cuban musicians was recorded in just six days and contained fourteen tracks that most people have heard in a non-corporate coffee house at one time or another, but don’t even know it. Several surviving members of the Buena Vista Social Club and is credited for world music leaning towards Afrobeat and other rhythmic incarnations to become festival favorites.
