25 Years Ago Today – Grandaddy Releases Debut Album ‘Under The Western Freeway’

25 years ago today (10/21/97), Grandaddy, a relatively then-unknown band from Modesto, CA released their debut album Under The Western Freeway. Led by Jason Lytle, the band’s lo-fi sound reflected what many indie bands would be doing ten years later on their own self-recording platforms with keyboards and minimalist drum setups. The band would receive more critical success with 2000’s The Sophtware Slump, but Under The Western Freeway still retains its own sensitive charm that remains influential to the DIY sect.
