30 years ago today (4/2/96), The Beastie Boys flipped the script with The In Sound from Way Out!, a vibey, fully instrumental compilation that highlighted just how deep their musical chops ran beyond rap.
Borrowing its title and retro-futurist aesthetic from the Perrey and Kingsley album of the same name, the release is equal parts funk, jazz, and psychedelic groove. Most of the tracks were culled from sessions surrounding Check Your Head (1992) and Ill Communication (1994), when the trio fully embraced live instrumentation and began jamming like a downtown NYC fusion band.
