30 years ago today (8/8/95), Ben Folds Five released their self-titled debut LP, the first statement on record from the trio that would spark the creative arc of bandleader/pianist Ben Folds. An acoustic piano fronted trio with barrelhouse piano banging, ’70s melodic AM radio harmonies, ’90s college rock, and a fuck you indie attitude, made Ben Folds Five one of the more unique artists of that decade. This debut record failed to chart, but sparked an intense bidding war eventually won by Sony Music, as the band would go on to release their more recognized Whatever and Ever Amen from 1997.
