30 years ago today (5/6/96). The Cure released their tenth studio album, Wild Mood Swings. The album arrived after the massive success of Disintegration and Wish, and at a time when alternative rock had shifted toward commercial alt-rock and Britpop. Rather than chasing trends, Robert Smith and company delivered a sprawling, unpredictable collection that ranged from gloomy ballads to bright pop songs, jazz flourishes, and Latin-inspired rhythms. Although the album might be a victim of the Cure’s prior genius, it’s still a rewarding listen for those who give it some time. Watch the band perform songs from the album in in 1996..
