35 years ago today (7/25/89), the Beastie Boys released their second LP, Paul’s Boutique. Featuring production by the Dust Brothers, the album is noted for being almost completely composed of samples, excluding the group’s vocal output. Although the album didn’t commercially succeed their earlier Licensed to Ill, the album’s popularity and legend have succeeded that of its predecessor, even noting the first time most people heard the artists featured in the samples. Check out the video for “Looking Down The Barrel of A Gun,” featuring samples of “Last Bongo in Belgium” by Incredible Bongo Band and “Mississippi Queen” by Mountain.
