42 years ago today (3/18/77), Iggy Pop released his debut solo LP titled The Idiot. The Idiot was the first of two LPs released in 1977 which Pop wrote and recorded in collaboration with David Bowie. Sessions for the album were begun prior to the recording of the first installment in Bowie’s Berlin Trilogy, Low (1977), and The Idiot has thus been called the unofficial beginning of Bowie’s Berlin period. The album featured “China Girl,” which would later become a huge Bowie hit in the early 80’s. Watch Iggy perform “Funtime” off The Idiot on live television in ’77 with Bowie on keys and vocals.
