50 years ago today (7/17/67). American jazz saxophonist and composer John Coltrane died from liver cancer at Huntington Hospital in Long Island, New York, aged 40. Having worked with Miles Davis, Dizzy Gillespie and others, Coltrane was at the forefront of the free jazz movement, Coltrane has inspired an entire generation of jazz musicians as well as instrumental rock outfits including the Grateful Dead.
