50 years ago today (10/1/74), King Crimson released their seventh studio album and marking the end of the band’s first era before they disbanded temporarily. The lineup for Red was reduced to a trio featuring Bill Bruford (drums), Robert Fripp (guitar), and John Wetton (bass and vocals), along with important contributions from members Ian McDonald and Mel Collins on saxophones, classical oboist Robin Miller and English jazz trumpeter Mark Charig. Red features a darker, heavier sound compared to Crimsons more earlier works, blending intricate musicianship with a raw, almost metallic edge.
