50 Years Ago Today – Ron “Pigpen” McKernan Plays Final Show With Grateful Dead

50 years ago today (6/17/72), keyboard player and founding member of the Grateful Dead Ron “Pigpen” McKernan played his last show with the band at the Hollywood Bowl. The band’s original frontman, old-soul Pigpen brought a true hard-edged blues sound to the band, as Pig seemed years beyond his age. Health problems force him to stop touring and performing live, and he died in March 1973 at age 27. Lisent to the Hollywood Bowl show below…
