85 years ago today (7/13/36), avant-garde ground-breaking saxophonist Albert Ayler was born. His album 1969 album New Grass, released a year before his death in 1970, and reissued on vinyl in 2020, stands as a landmark that influenced generations of jazz, R&B, funk, hip-hop, post-punk, and other forms. Ayler’s improvisational tenacities rivaled that of John Coltrane and Ornette Coleman, making Ayler a jazz name that always deserved more recognition. Listen to “New Ghosts” off of New Grass.
