Happy 60th Birthday to Kim Thayil, guitarist and co-founder of Soundgarden. With his thunderous riffs that combine melody and groove, Thayil helped create the “Seattle Sound.” With his quiet stage appearance, Thayil was the perfect foil for Cornell’s unmistakable vocal range, leading Soundgarden through its wave of eras, which included their mainstream high in the mid ’90s. Thayil was named the 100th greatest guitarist of all time by Rolling Stone in 2010, and although Soundgarden is now over, lets hope we haven heard the last from his guitar. Watch Soundgarden at their peak in 1992 live at the Pinkpop Festival in Landgraaf, Netherlands.
