Happy 70th birthday today to drumming great Carl Palmer (born 3/20/50) of Emerson Lake & Palmer, Asia, The Crazy World of Arthur Brown, Atomic Rooster and more recently Carl Palmer Legacy. Palmer is considered one of rock’s greatest and a huge influence in progressive rock. As ELP would proceed to record hits like “Lucky Man” and “Tarkus” and the album Brain Salad Surgery, all featuring over-the-top organ shenanigans via Keith Emerson, Palmer was a rock star in every way, blending classical compositions with modern-at-the-time embellishments of blues, rock and psychedelia. As the last living member of the ELP trio, let’s watch that prodigious band perform a full show live in Zurich ’70.
