Happy 75th birthday to one of the finest blue-eyed soul voices of the last half-century, Paul Carrack (born 4/22/51). If pure vocal ability were the only measure, Carrack would be mentioned alongside heavyweights like Rod Stewart and Elton John.
Beyond his unmistakable voice, Carrack is a gifted keyboardist whose career has quietly threaded through some major moments in pop and rock history. He first broke through with Ace, writing and singing their 1975 hit “How Long,” a transatlantic success. He later joined Squeeze, delivering one of his most beloved performances on “Tempted,” before becoming a key member of Mike and the Mechanics. Along the way, Carrack has remained a go-to session player and collaborator, including time in Eric Clapton’s touring band.
Check out Carrack in his brief days with Squeeze singing the irreplaceable “How Long”.
